Enigma
Rotors / Reflectors / Base Plates / Begleitbuchs / Storage Cases /
Accessories Foreword: If you have any additional
information and/or photos regarding Enigma accessories that should be
recorded in this file, please get in touch with me (Richard Brisson) at this
email address: spytools@sympatico.ca
and I will reply back. In mid-2020, I decided to
start tracking Enigma serial numbered components and accessories such as
rotors, reflectors, storage/transport boxes, chassis, serial plates, rotor
boxes, begleitbuchs, etc. These typically come with a serial number “usually”
matching the Enigma with which they were issued. In a few cases,
Cryptocollectors supplied information as to any Enigma machines or Enigma
accessories they have. The main motivation for recording this information
stemmed from David Hamer who was a key contributor to cryptologic history
research by maintaining a log file which kept track of Enigmas and their
locations – his original tracking information can still be accessed online
thanks to the Wayback Machine Internet Archive: David
Hamer’s Enigma Locations. Significant updates to this file are being
maintained by Dan and Tom Perera at this file location. An excellent webpage on
Enigma serial numbers (information such as range, padding, manufacturers,
etc) is the following written by Frode Weierud: https://cryptocellar.org/enigma/e-prod-history/index.html A number of
Cryptocollectors have been very helpful in tracking down Enigma accessories
with serial numbers including notably Patrick Hayes, Ralph Simpson, David Cripps,
Niall McLaughlin, Detlev Gross, Mark Baldwin, Marc Sachs in addition to
whatever I can find on eBay and other auction sites. In July 2021, one of our
members of Cryptocollectors (Nick - K4NYW) alerted us about the NSA portal
which has been designed to archive all NCM artifacts and library holdings on
this website: https://5099.sydneyplus.com/final/Portal/Default.aspx?lang=en-US As of early August 2021, I
started adding all Enigma related artifacts with a SN attribute. As far as I
know, I have recorded everything Enigma related from the NCM website with
links appearing in the list below – simply key on “NCM Artifact” if you wish
to only view those that have been added. About 100 such NCM artifacts have
now been recorded. And my many thanks to the NCM Librarian, Rob Simpson, for
allowing direct links to artifacts based on their “Object ID” – that’s hugely
accommodating! There are of course a good
number of rich sources for tracking Enigma Serial Numbers (whether Enigma
themselves or their parts): a)
First and foremost: David Hamer’s Enigma
Locations file which has been enriched in recent years by Dan/Tom Perera; b) National
Cryptologic Museum’s database (SydneyPlus link above has been a great
facilitator!); c)
Cryptocollectors and their collections; d) Cryptocollectors assistance in observing new
data/Enigmas on the web or visits to museums; e)
eBay! f)
This website on Enigmas in Norway: https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC623AJ
g) Wayback
Machine with archived information and photos. Definitions: i)
Core Enigma –
Originally issued but without enough original rotors to populate the Enigma
itself. Base plate and reflector (if there is one) match serial number. ii)
Mixed Enigma –
Enigma that looks functional (may or may not operate – i.e. it has enough
rotors (at least one with an S/N different from the machine’s SN) to populate
the machine) and may or may not have spare rotors. iii)
Base Enigma –
Enigma that looks functional (may or may not operate - i.e. it has enough
original rotors (of the same S/N) to populate the machine) but missing some
of its spare rotors. iv)
Functionally
Complete Enigma – Enigma with all of its issued rotors and all S/N’s matching
that of the machine. v)
Ultra-Complete
Enigma – For an A3 machine, this would mean that it also has its original
spare rotors storage box with the same S/N. For an M4 Enigma, it would have
its matching Begleitbuch, and at least one original key to lock the machine
(there were normally two issued with each M4); it would also have its
original spare rotor box with one original key (there were two of these
issued as well). [Obviously no requirement for an original battery!] vi)
R: Relic –
damaged from being submerged in water, buried or partially destroyed. vii) F: Functional
NF: Non-functional. viii) NCM - “National Cryptologic Museum” (Fort Meade,
Maryland, USA). ix)

Base B-Series B207 Enigma at the National
Cryptologic Museum. Wheels and UKW are all marked B207 [I, II, III] but the wiring of all wheels except ETW is
non-standard and the UKW is otherwise unmarked. The index markings on all wheels are in red. Photos
taken by Jim Oram of the NCM's B207 Enigma when it was
used in the 1990’s on the museum floor for visitors to
play with. Photos were originally downloaded onto
Cryptocollectors by David Hamer within a zipped file. Needless to
stay, any demonstration Enigma will incur some breakage and it
did for Jim Oram to fix! It was finally realized that this was a rather special and unique Enigma as the B-Enigma’s were meant to be used by direct reports to Hitler.

Bletchley Park Enigma T244 https://bletchleypark.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/555x730_8_CU15.jpg with description: “Enigma T,
T244. The Enigma T was developed in 1942 for communications between Germany and Japan.
It was based on the commercially available Enigma K; the Germans did not wish
to supply
another power, even an ally, with their military Enigma. Uniquely, the wiring
of the entry disc which
connects the keyboard to the rotors was scrambled. Although it had no
plugboard, its encryption
was strengthened by additional notches on its rotors. Each notch triggered a
‘turnover’ in the next rotor along, stepping that rotor
ahead by one letter. Whereas most models had one notch per
rotor, the Enigma T had five, resulting in a highly irregular pattern of
movement. The traffic
it generated, named JN-18 at Bletchley Park, was rarely intercepted and so
difficult to break.” ----- Observations
from John Alexander (Cryptocollector – 19 Oct 2024): “Popping in
for a look at an Enigma at BP, I saw a strong cardboard box with a letter
inside from GCHQ about
loaning the contents to BP. Inside the box was an Enigma K ... except that it
was stamped T244 (I remember
that number correctly?) - a 'Tirpitz' Enigma was in my hands.” “Later, Jim
Oram made a beautiful box for the T.” “Anyway,
this Enigma T is out on show in B Block ... to the best of my knowledge.
Gorgeous.” |

and had a very
similar design. It could produce 1,782,206,400 possible encryptions. The
letter ‘K’ comes from
the German Kommerziell (commercial), and many were purchased by German users –
such as the railway. This machine was one of a batch sent from Germany for
use by Nationalist
forces during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and was used at the military headquarters
in the Canary Islands. An anti-glare panel is stored inside the lid, to
shield the lampboard

G312. The Enigma G was developed in 1931 and designed to be smaller and more portable
than other models. This machine belonged to the Abwehr, the German military
intelligence service. It
was part of the sub-family of ‘Zählwerk’ Enigmas, which utilised cog-wheels
rather than the
usual levers and pawls to move the rotors. This meant that they could be
‘stepped back’ to correct
mistakes, and, uniquely, the reflector moved during encipherment. The Enigma
G used a high number
of turnover positions to produce a complex rotor movement, leading to its
nickname at Bletchley
Park, the ’11-15-17 machine’.” -------- (Photo taken by Fred André at 2009 Enigma Reunion in

A441 |
Offered at Christies Auctions On 14 November 2011 SF : 74,500 USD https://www.christies.com/en/lot/lot-5496973 -------- Information from Klaus Kopacz: A441 was the only one machine I remember had numbers
on the lamp field, keyboard guiding plate and the contact
mounting plate – pictures are attached. I suppose that it was a
common practice to stamp these parts at early machines. The machines,
the parts of A441 were from, were delivered to the
„Heereswaffenamt" in Dec. 1927. Documents from Frode Weierud tell, the machines
delivered in Dec. 1927 were in the number range A386 to A696. Some other interesting details of A441 are shown in
these pictures: |
Christies Auctions 14 Nov 2011 ------- Information from Klaus Kopacz |
A449 |
Initially flagged by Patrick Hayes, this Enigma
appears to be an A-series 3-rotor (appears to be II, III, IV) Enigma with its location being in Hungary. The number “449” is inscribed on both inside cover
and on top of the Enigma. Cryptocollector A.T. has identified the following
website as the original story (Hungary): https://www.ha5kdr.hu/2021/01/enigma-szentendrerol This other website provides what appears to be a step-by-step dissection of this Enigma – from photos, we have that the reflector is indeed A449 and there are indications that the metal
cabinet underneath the rotors is stamped “449”. https://www.ha5kdr.hu/2022/03/megjavitottuk-az-enigmat This Enigma would seem to fall in the category of Enigmas with mixed SN parts as identified by Klaus Kopacz -
the metal lampboard is stamped A712 as shown in this photo: https://www.ha5kdr.hu/galeria/enigma-1/87021b20-2381-4758-b306-e80245ce8f0b.jpeg |

A1214. The Enigma D was developed in 1926. It is the earliest model on display
at Bletchley Park, but already more sophisticated than the original design.
Its three rotors,
which scrambled letters to create the encryption, could be removed and placed
into the machine
in any order. Its reflector, which directed the electrical signal in the
machine back through the
rotors, was also settable. This machine was delivered to the Italian Navy in
1932 and used by
Benito Mussolini. It was captured in Northern Italy by US Naval Officers on 29th
April 1945.” https://c7.alamy.com/comp/E5YPJW/close-up-of-italian-naval-enigma-cipher-machine-a1214-E5YPJW.jpg -------- NCM Artifact A1214 Base Enigma – Object ID: 2008.0430.1056 Reflector Rotor – A1214 – Object ID: 2008.0430.1059 Rotor I – A1214 – Object ID: 2008.0430.1102 Rotor II – A1214 – Object ID: 2008.0430.1105 Rotor III – A1214 – Object ID: 2008.0430.1106 |
